Find recent ideas on the technical design of the DiSSCo infrastructure
Good news for data lovers! DiSSCo is getting a new blog going with more in-depth discussions on technical design topics.
The blog has been set up by a small group of dedicated professionals – members of the DiSSCo Technical Team – with a wide range of skills and experience in data management and informatics for natural sciences collections. In coordination with the DiSSCo Cooridnation Office and the general Assembly, they responsible for making informed decisions about the technical design of the DiSSCo data infrastructure and aligned elements.
DiSSCo Data types are around the basic concept of a Digital Specimen, being a digital representation on the Internet of a physical object in a natural science collection.
A ‘digital specimen’ acts as a surrogate in cyberspace for a specific physical specimen, identifying its actual location and authoritatively saying something about its collection event (who, when, where) and taxonomy (what), as well as providing links to high-resolution images. A digital specimen exposes supplementary information about related literature, traits, tissue samples and DNA sequences, chemical analyses, environmental information, and much more, stored elsewhere than in the natural science collection itself.
